Questions, answered

Parent FAQs

Honest answers to the questions we hear most from families considering online speech therapy.

Does online speech therapy actually work for kids?

Yes, and often better than parents expect. Research and our own experience across many sessions show children make real, measurable progress online. A big reason is the focused 1-on-1 attention your child gets, instead of competing for time in a crowded group. The screen-based games and activities are genuinely engaging for kids, and because you are involved, the practice carries over into daily life. If you have doubts, a free consult is the easiest way to see how it works.

What ages do you work with?

Bloom specializes in young children through elementary age, including early childhood and autistic learners. We tailor every session to your child's developmental stage, attention span, and interests. If you are unsure whether your child is the right age or fit, book a free consult and we will talk it through honestly. We would rather give you a straight answer than enroll a child who is not ready.

Is my child too young for speech therapy?

Probably not. Early support is one of the most powerful things you can do, and there is real value in starting young when a delay is suspected. Even very young children benefit from play-based, parent-coached therapy that builds early communication skills. We meet your child exactly where they are and keep sessions short and engaging. A free consult will help us decide together whether now is the right time to begin.

Do you take Medicaid?

Yes. Bloom accepts South Carolina Medicaid along with major private insurance plans, and we offer self-pay options as well. Accepted plans include SC Medicaid, Healthy Blue, Absolute Total Care, First Choice by Select Health, Molina Healthcare of SC, and private insurance. Many families pay little to nothing out of pocket. Not sure what you are covered for? We will check for you for free. See insurance & coverage →

Can I sit in during sessions?

We truly hope you will. Parent involvement is one of the single biggest drivers of progress, so you are always welcome in the session. We will show you exactly what we are working on and coach you on simple ways to practice between visits. You do not need any special training, just your presence and willingness to play along. The more you are involved, the faster the carryover at home.

How long are sessions?

Sessions are typically scheduled weekly and are sized to your child's age and attention span, so younger children may have shorter sessions than older ones. We keep the pace lively and the activities varied to hold attention the whole time. Your specific session length and frequency are set after the evaluation, based on your child's goals and any insurance or IEP requirements. We will go over the exact plan with you before we begin.

What technology do we need?

Very little. You need a device with a camera and microphone, such as a laptop, tablet, or desktop, plus a reasonably stable internet connection and a quiet spot for your child to focus. We use a simple, secure video platform and will walk you through the setup before your first session. If you run into any tech hiccups, we will help you troubleshoot so technology never gets in the way of your child's progress.

How do you measure progress?

Every session is goal-based, and we collect data on your child's targets so progress is tracked, not guessed at. You will see what we are working on and get regular updates on how your child is doing against their goals. For families connected to a school IEP, our reporting aligns to those goals as well. This means you always know whether the plan is working and can celebrate the wins along the way.

What if my child is shy on camera?

This is one of the most common worries, and it almost always fades quickly. We start sessions with a familiar song and playful, low-pressure activities that help children warm up at their own pace. Having you nearby in the early sessions can make a big difference, and we will coach you on how to help. Within a few visits, most shy kids look forward to their sessions. We will never rush or push your child past their comfort.
